A Look Ahead: Trends in Assignment Types, Destinations, and Pay

The pace of change has accelerated dramatically in recent years, producing significant alterations in the business environment. This situation has had an impact on the way companies design and manage their international assignment programmes.

Assignees to Some Asian Cities Struggling With Traffic Congestion

Many expatriate participants in ORC Worldwide's 2010 Location-Specific Survey of International Assignment Policies and Practices face traffic jams on a daily basis. In some of the cities studied by ORC (Bangalore, Bangkok, Delhi, Guangzhou, Istanbul, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Moscow, Mumbai, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo), traffic congestion was the number one problem. In Guangzhou, traffic shared first place with pollution.

Pollution Hazardous in Some Assignee Destinations

Expatriate participants in ORC Worldwide's 2010 Location-Specific Survey of International Assignment Policies and Practices report pollution as their top concern in several destination cities (Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kiev, Mexico City, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Warsaw). In Guangzhou, pollution tied with traffic for first place; in Kiev and Mexico City, pollution shared first place with crime.
