Trends in Compensation for International Commuter Assignments
In spite of the ups and downs of the worldwide economic situation, globalization continues to have a major impact on the need for talented and highly mobile employees willing to undertake international assignments. Some of these individuals cross national borders on a regular basis, not as business travelers, but as "commuter" expatriates.
When it comes to sending employees abroad, many companies aim to keep the family's purchasing power in the host location comparable to what they enjoyed at home. Achieving that goal entails a close look at price levels in both locations. Just as important to the pay package are national spending patterns, that is, how average people spend their money on bread and eggs, car repairs, books and magazines, housing, taxes, investments, and so on.
The use of short-term expatriate assignments is increasing among nearly half (46.8 percent) of the multinational participants in ORC Worldwide's 2009 Survey of Short-term International Assignment Policies. This follow-up to a survey series that began in 2000 reported Asia-Pacific as the region experiencing the highest increase in number of short-term assignees, followed by Western Europe, North America, and Central/Eastern Europe.
